Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer – Out for the Season after Torn ACL

Quarterback Carson Palmer of the Arizona Cardinals suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) after a recent game against the St. Louis Rams. Coach Bruce Arians stated that although there is no inner or medial collateral ligament (MCL) damage, the Cardinals won’t see Palmer back on the field until June or July 2015.

According to USA Today, Palmer signed a three-year, $50 million contract extension two days before he tore his ACL. The Cardinals have the utmost confidence in backup quarterback Drew Stanton, with high hopes he will help take the team to Super Bowl XLIX. The Cardinals have other quarterbacks on hand in case Stanton is injured during the remainder of the season: “Quarterback Ryan Lindley is returning to the Cardinals in the wake of Carson Palmer’s season-ending knee injury. The Cardinals announced Tuesday that they had placed Carson Palmer on injured reserve and replaced him on the active roster by signing Lindley from the San Diego Chargers practice squad, giving them insurance against further injury at the quarterback position. Drew Stanton started Sunday’s game vs. the Detroit Lions, and he will be backed up by rookie Logan Thomas,” (QB Ryan Lindley returns to Cardinals: Fox Sports, November 11, 2014).

“Palmer must be in such pain right now, not only physically but mentally,” states Frank N. Darras, America’s top disability insurance lawyer to the pros. “He’s going to have some tough times ahead of him in the coming months to try and heal up as quickly as possible. Although the Cardinals seem to have high hopes for his recovery, I hope this does not turn into a career-ending injury but he should be prepared nonetheless.” Read More

As with most high profile professional athletes, Palmer most likely has a strong disability insurance policy with an own-occupation rider. Disability insurance is meant for anyone who would find it tough to make ends meet if they could not work due to an injury. This is true for the majority of those living in the United States. For those like Palmer with a high-income talent, an own-occupation rider will enable them to collect on their policy benefits while they retrain and work at another job.

“Most Americans discount what disability insurance can do for them after an unexpected injury. A significant percentage of Americans already know how quickly an injury can whittle away at their savings, even if they are just out of work for a few months. Talk with your insurance agent now to purchase a strong individual disability insurance policy to provide you and your family with benefits if or when you are seriously injured. If you are prepared ahead of time, you won’t have to struggle to put food on the table later,” says Darras.
