NFL player opts against buying disability insurance

Many of our California readers are big football fans. While most cheer for a home state team, such as the San Francisco 49ers, San Diego Chargers or Oakland Raiders, this doesn’t mean they are unfamiliar with the teams that make up the rest of the league.

There is no denying the fact that football is one of the most dangerous sports in the world. Every game, players are injured in some way. While some injuries are minor and only hold the player out for a short period of time, others are much more serious. For this reason, a growing number of players are beginning to understand the importance of purchasing a disability insurance policy.

Hakeem Nicks, a well-known wide receiver for the New York Giants, is one of many players who has decided against purchasing coverage as a means of protecting his future in the event of a serious injury.

Nicks noted that he contemplated purchasing an insurance policy, but decided against it after looking at both the pros and cons. He added, “It got brought my way but, honestly, I never really thought about it. I heard the good about it, I heard the bad about it.”

Jermichael Finley, a tight end for the Green Bay Packers, suffered a spine injury earlier this season that could derail his career. Fortunately for Finley, he purchased a $10 million disability insurance policy that guarantees a solid financial position in the future, even if football is no longer an option.

Athletes often purchase disability insurance, and others should consider doing the same. If you have a policy and have faced any issues with collecting benefits, there are legal options available that may help you get the compensation you deserve.
