Take time to look at your insurance coverage

Your source for the latest health, disability and insurance news and tips.

An insurance commissioner in another state is calling for individuals to review their insurance coverage and take stock of options. This call is going out as the coastal state prepares for hurricane season, and the commissioner says that's always a good time to look over all insurance coverage. For residents in California, weather-related issues and natural disasters are potential issues year round, making any time a good time to review your coverage.

While you'll likely want to look at your property-related insurance policies, the commissioner from the other state points out that looking at all policies at the same time is a good idea. Taking an annual account of your coverage options helps you understand where risks of no or partial coverage might be and where you are most vulnerable to potential financial losses or hardships.

While looking at your insurance options, be sure to move beyond the common three -- property, health and life insurance -- to other types of coverage. Do you have a policy that pays out to help you with expenses if you are disabled and unable to work for a long period of time? What happens if you become incapacitated or need long-term skilled care in your home or another facility as you age?

You might be surprised to discover how many things traditional health insurance won't pay for. By taking time now to work with a professional to understand your insurance options, you can better cover yourself in the future. Because things change, it's a good idea to review your insurance situation and options at least once each year to make appropriate changes.
