Affordable Car Insurance Available for California College Students

As parents and high school graduates prepare for the end of summer and the start of college classes in the fall, thoughts turn to tuition, textbooks and upcoming school parties. As college students look forward to heading off to school, either in cars of their own or their parents' vehicles, it is also important to consider what type of auto insurance coverage is needed.

Although drivers under the age of 22 account for just over 10 percent of the U.S. driving population, they make up about 30 percent of the number of car crashes each year. Thousands of college students are injured each year in car accidents and many do not have adequate car insurance coverage.

The State of California requires all drivers to have automobile insurance. Many parents cover their children under their own insurance policies and, for many, that makes the best economic sense. Unfortunately, not everyone can easily afford car insurance, especially when paying tuition for college-age children.

California Low Cost Automobile Insurance Program

California developed a low cost insurance program making auto insurance policies affordable for many of its residents. The program is ideal for many college students and, if eligible, a policy can cost less than $400 a year. In order to qualify for the low cost insurance, the car value must be less than $20,000 and the driver must:

  • Have a good driving record
  • Be licensed continuously for three or more years
  • Be at least 19 years old
  • Meet income requirements
