Frank N. Darras Moot Court Competition to Argue Disability Case Pending Before California Supreme Court

Western State University in Fullerton, CA, will host the Second Annual Frank N. Darras Moot Court Competition on March 27-28. The competition is named in honor of Frank N. Darras, the nation’s leading disability and long-term care insurance lawyer.

This year, competing teams are to brief and argue their assigned sides of the matter of Munson (Kenneth) v. Del Taco, Inc., currently pending before the California Supreme Court California, Supreme Court docket number S162818.

Darras has generously committed $2500 to be divided amongst the winning teams. First place will be awarded $1250, second, $800 and $250 will go respectively to the Best Brief and Best Oralist.

“Last year, at WSU, we held the first annual Frank N. Darras Disability Law Moot Court Competition, at the school’s Fullerton campus. It is my understanding that it is the only moot court competition in the country that focuses exclusively on disability law,” says James A.

Hayes, Jr., Assistant Dean of Academic Programs and Associate Professor at Western State University College of Law. “This year, we are particularly excited about arguing an actual case that is pending.”

“This competition affords law students the opportunity to understand insurance law and determine if this is the field they want to explore and master as a career. The DarrasLaw Moot Court provides a great venue for students to compete in this practice area and understand how they can help everyday Americans who buy insurance to protect them from the unthinkable,” says Hayes.

“In a down economy, insurance companies practice delay and deny tactics to keep their balance sheets healthy. We could sure use some great new insurance lawyers to stand up for premium paying policyholders,” says Darras.
