Tony Romo Suffers From Two Transverse Process Fractures, Darras Discusses the Importance of Disability Insurance for Athletes

According to Bleacher Report, and Dallas Cowboy teammates, Tony Romo is a tough competitor with admirable determination. “Quarterback Tony Romo only enhanced his already revered status in the locker room by returning from two fractured transverse processes to lead the Dallas Cowboys to a 31-17 victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium,” and his teammates have nothing but praise for him. Romo missed playing in the 28-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals after initially suffering the injury in a 20-17 overtime loss to the Washington Redskins.

During a recent game against the Washington Redskins, Tony Romo walked off the field with two transverse process fractures. These can be painful so it’s a waiting game to see if Romo can play through the pain or if he will sit on the sidelines until he is fully healed.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time Romo has had back issues. He suffered from a herniated disk during the 2013 season, which required surgery and kept him off the field for approximately eight months. He had another surgery previously to remove a cyst but doctors said it was a relatively minor procedure. The team will want to get Romo healed and back in the game as soon as possible since they have some tough games ahead of them.

“Dallas Coach Jason Garrett said Tuesday that quarterback Tony Romo’s latest back injury was unrelated to the herniated disk he sustained last season and that the team was waiting for additional testing to see if he would be available for the Cowboys’ game on Sunday against Arizona,” (Cowboys Awaiting Tests on Tony Romo’s Back Injury: The New York Times, October 28, 2014).

“Romo just can’t seem to catch a break with these back issues,” says Frank N. Darras, America’s disability insurance lawyer to the pros. “Even though they are all unrelated, the pain from back injuries can be tough to deal with. Not only does he want to get back out on the field to help the Cowboy’s win but I’m sure he would also like to be able to play with his kids and do all the little things we take for granted.”

Pros with his talent should have an own-occupation rider attached to their individual disability insurance policy. Most policies provide benefits to the policyholder if they cannot work for an extended amount of time, regardless of the job. The own-occupation rider lets a policyholder receive their benefits even if they can find another job in a different venue making comparable money. This is particularly crucial for those talented individuals like athletes and doctors that make a significant income.

“When we see injuries like this one, it becomes all the more apparent how necessary individual disability insurance is for each and every one of us. Back issues can be excruciatingly painful and often leave people unable to perform daily tasks like going to work or even standing for extended amounts of time. Regardless of who you are or what your occupation is, get in touch with your insurance agent to get you started with your disability insurance policy. You never know when an injury will strike and leave you out of work for months at a time,” says Darras.
