Don’t ignore disability insurance in your 40s

Your source for the latest health, disability and insurance news and tips.

All of our California readers, regardless of age, realize there are some types of insurance they need. There are also some types they do not require. And along the same lines, there are instances when people think they have the right coverage, just to find out the hard way that they don't.

One of the biggest mistakes people in their 40s make is not having the appropriate amount of disability insurance. If an accident occurs or people become suddenly ill, they may no longer be able to provide for their family. Those with disability insurance often have enough money to get by until they are able to get back on their feet.

Although a person can become disabled at any point in his or her life, this is especially important for those in their 40s. It is during this time that people are often reaching their peak in terms of their career and earnings. This shows that not only do people in this age bracket need disability insurance, but they must make sure they have the appropriate amount of coverage, based on their salary and current lifestyle.

According to the Social Security Administration, roughly one out of every four people who are 20 years old today will become disabled before the age of 67. This proves the importance of having disability insurance, regardless of your age.

People in their 40s, as well as many others, need to purchase disability insurance so they can get the financial help they need if they become disabled. Some people, even those with comprehensive coverage, find that their claim has been denied. If this happens, it is important to learn more and then fight for your benefits.
